POSTERSESSION Social Work in Motion

Caroline Schmitt
Matthias D. Witte:

CRiSS-Vortrag: Yalız Akbaba (Educational Science) - "Make migration great again. How minority teachers are called to capitalise foreignness - conceived as a threat"

Usually, discourses of migrants' children in school insinuate educational problems, social deviances and cultural incongruities. Interestingly, this stigma is reversed when talking about ethnic minority teachers, who are discursively produced to be a solution to educational inequality in schools. Yalız Akbaba gives insight to current results from a school field research, enlightening the mechanisms of double binding-ethnicity and the way teachers indeed turn the paradoxes into capital.

CRiSS-Vortrag: Caroline Schmitt (Educational Science) - „Some get ahead, others remain” - Young refugees' perspectives on inclusion in Germany

Caroline Schmitt provides an insight on how young refugees experience inclusion in Germany. Based on qualitative interviews, she analyses the opportunities and limitations of participation from the young people's perspective and discusses the consequences for (social work) practice.

International Conference "TRANSNATIONAL SOCIAL SUPPORT – Everyday Life Perspectives and Political Insights" 2-3 March 2017, Mainz (Germany)

Transnationalism has become a useful lens for investigating processes of migration, mobility and social support. In recent years, efforts have been made to broaden the concept encouraging an examination of these issues from multiple and interdisciplinary points of view. The conference presents varied insights emerging from interdisciplinary empirical research and theoretical perspectives on mobility, migration and in particular social support in transnational contexts.

International conference on Judgment and Decision-Making in Social Work, September 22-24 2016, Johannes Gutenberg-Universität Mainz

Social Work as a professional practice is a field where people continually have to make professional judgments and decisions. It is striking that in social work theory judgment and decision-making is hardly or superficially addressed, even though the importance of professional judgment is highlighted in theoretical debates. Therefore the conference will offer an occasion to discuss the issue in the context of different and even controversial positions, as well as to contextualize them in the light of empirical research. The goal is to give more consideration to professional judgment in social work theory and research and establishing a network between future possible projects on judgment and decision-making in social work.
